Leslie mittelberg

In 1995, Leslie founded Swahili African Modern to promote African artisans in the U.S. market. The company was sold on May 1, 2023. The new owners are dedicated to fair trade and sustainable income for their artisan partners. Over 27 years, Swahili expanded from Kenyan groups to craft producers in 15 African nations. By collaborating with artisans and using natural and recycled materials, Swahili offered a wide range of handmade products blending traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Leslie's experience includes artisan assessments for the World Bank and USAID, facilitating workshops for the Peace Corps and West African Trade Hub, and serving on the boards of Fair Trade Federation and NY NOW's Advisory board.
